From Lurker to Power User: A 90-Day Reddit Activation Plan
A founder's week-by-week playbook for going from invisible to recognizable on Reddit, in 13 weeks, without faking interest or burning your account.
You opened a Reddit account three months ago, scrolled, maybe upvoted a few things, and then closed the tab. You know the platform matters for your product, but every time you sit down to "do Reddit", you don't quite know where to start, and the few comments you've left feel like they vanished into a void.
This is normal. Reddit doesn't reward arrival, it rewards persistence. The good news is that the path from lurker to recognizable contributor is well-trodden, and it fits inside 90 days if you take it seriously.
What follows is a thirteen-week timeline. It is not a hack. It is not a shortcut. It is the slow, deliberate sequence that turns a cold account into a presence that subreddit regulars start to notice, and eventually, trust.
Weeks 1–2: Pick your ground and lurk on purpose
The first two weeks contain almost no writing. You are not trying to grow yet; you are trying to understand the rooms you intend to walk into.
Pick four to six subreddits. Two should be directly aligned with your product's audience, the kind of place where your ICP hangs out. Two should be adjacent, broader communities where the same people show up to talk about wider topics. The last one or two should be pure interest, something you actually care about, unrelated to work, because a healthy account never reads as a single-purpose marketing account.
Open each subreddit's rules page. Read the wiki if it has one. Then sort by Top of the Month and read the first thirty threads. Pay attention to:
- Which posts get rewarded with hundreds of upvotes versus which get removed.
- The names that appear repeatedly in the comments — the regulars.
- The tone moderators use when they intervene.
- The unwritten norms (what people complain about in meta threads is gold).
By the end of week 2, you should be able to describe each subreddit's culture in a sentence. If you can't, you haven't lurked enough.
The cost of skipping the lurking phase is paid for the next twelve months in removed posts and frosty replies.
Karma target by end of week 2: 0. You are not commenting yet.
What to avoid: Don't introduce yourself in a "hi, I'm new here" post. Nobody wants that. Don't comment on threads older than 48 hours. Don't follow your own product's subreddit and treat it as research, your competitors might lurk there too.
Weeks 3–4: Comment-only, with substance
You start writing in week 3. The rule for the next two weeks is simple: comments only, no posts, no links, no product mentions.
A substantive comment on Reddit usually has three traits. It addresses the specific question or claim in the parent thread, not a generic version. It contains at least one piece of information the OP did not already have. And it ends without trying to start another conversation, you are contributing to theirs, not redirecting it.
Aim for two to four comments per day, spread across your chosen subreddits, never all in one sitting. Reply to threads that are between two and twenty hours old, the ones still on the front page of the subreddit but past the initial spike, where thoughtful comments actually get read.
By the end of week 4, you should have around 200 comment karma concentrated in your top two subreddits, and a handful of replies from named users who started recognizing your handle. If you have 600 karma, you are commenting too much. If you have 30 karma, your comments are not landing, and you should reread the Top of the Month threads to recalibrate tone.
Karma target by end of week 4: 150–250 comment karma in your top 2 subs.
What to avoid: Don't argue with the most upvoted comment to get visibility. It works mechanically and costs you reputation. Don't post the same insight in three different threads on the same day. And do not mention what you do for a living yet — not even in passing.
Weeks 5–7: First posts, no promotion
Week 5 is when you start posting. The temptation will be to post about what you are building. Resist.
Your first three or four posts should be questions, observations, or genuine resources, in the same subreddits where you have been commenting. A post asking how others handle a specific operational problem in your space. A short writeup of something you learned recently. A counterpoint to a thread that got high engagement two weeks ago.
The format that works in week 5 is almost always:
A clear, specific title that promises a single piece of value. An opening line that states your premise without preamble. Three to six paragraphs of actual substance. No links. No screenshots that include your domain. A closing question that invites the kind of response a regular of the subreddit would want to write.
Aim for one post per week, in your top one or two subreddits only. Spread them across days of the week and times of day, post analytics tools will tell you when each subreddit peaks, but more importantly, post when you would naturally be online to reply to comments within the first hour.
A post that gets 40 upvotes and 12 thoughtful comments is a better outcome than one that gets 400 upvotes and no real conversation. The first builds your standing with the community. The second mostly tells you the algorithm liked your title.
Karma target by end of week 7: 600–900 combined karma, with at least one post above 50 upvotes in your top sub.
What to avoid: Don't post in five subreddits at once with variations of the same idea. Mods talk, and even when they don't, regulars notice. Don't delete posts that underperform, leave them up. Your posting history is the credibility you are building. Don't follow up a flat post with another post the next day, give the subreddit a week of comments before you try again.
Weeks 8–10: Become a name in two or three communities
This is the phase most founders never reach, because they get impatient at week 6 and start linking to their landing page. If you have stayed disciplined, weeks 8 through 10 are where the dynamic flips, instead of you trying to be seen, regulars start replying to you specifically.
The signals that this is happening:
You notice the same three or four usernames showing up in your comment replies, often with friendly disagreement rather than hostility. A moderator engages with one of your posts in a non-modding capacity. You get tagged in a thread you didn't post in, because someone thought your perspective would be useful. A DM arrives, not from a marketer, from a real user with a real question.
Your job in this phase is to keep doing exactly what you have been doing, but to deepen rather than broaden. Resist the urge to expand to new subreddits. Two or three communities where you are recognized are worth more than ten where you are forgotten.
Continue commenting four to six times per day. Continue posting once per week. Start replying to comments on your posts within an hour, and to comments on threads you are participating in within a few hours. Reddit rewards conversational presence, not just content drops.
By week 10 you should have a small mental map of who's who in your top subreddits. The regulars. The respected dissenters. The mods who actually moderate versus the ones who only show up for rule violations. This map is the asset you have been building all along.
Karma target by end of week 10: 1500–2500 combined karma, with at least 20 comments above 30 upvotes in the last 30 days.
What to avoid: Don't update your profile with a link to your product yet. Profiles are checked, and a clean enthusiast profile makes weeks 11–13 work. A profile that suddenly looks like a marketing page resets the trust you spent ten weeks building.
Weeks 11–13: Introduce product context, naturally
Week 11 is the first time your product enters your Reddit activity, and even then, only when it is genuinely the right answer.
The pattern that works: someone asks a question your product solves. You answer the question fully, without mentioning the product, in a way that would be useful even if your product did not exist. Then, in the last paragraph or in a follow-up comment if asked, you mention what you are building, with a sentence about why your answer is informed by it. No link unless requested. If the OP or a commenter asks for a link, then you provide it.
You will do this maybe two or three times across the three-week phase. That is the right cadence. Founders who do it ten times in a week are still doing marketing. Founders who do it twice in a month are doing what works.
Around week 12 or 13, you can post once with explicit founder context, framed as a learning, a retrospective, or a teardown. Not a launch. Not a "we just shipped". Something like: what I learned trying to validate X with 80 users in the first 60 days. The community is more generous to founders who teach than to founders who announce.
By week 13, your account is no longer a lurker's account. It is a participant's account, with a known username, a body of substantive contributions, and a small but real reputation in two or three communities. The next phase, which is not in this playbook, is what you do with that for the next eighteen months.
Karma target by end of week 13: 3000+ combined karma, with two or three subreddits where moderators and regulars know your handle.
What to avoid: Don't start DMing users you noticed in threads. The shift from public contribution to private outreach is the fastest way to undo three months of trust. If outreach is part of your strategy, build it on top of weeks of context, not on top of week 13.
The point of the whole exercise
The temptation, reading a 13-week plan, is to compress it. To start commenting in week 1 instead of lurking. To post in week 3 instead of week 5. To mention your product in week 7 instead of week 11. Every founder we have watched try this has the same outcome: their account hits a soft ceiling around week 8, gets flagged by automod or by a moderator, and they restart from zero with a worse profile than before.
The 90 days are not the goal. The goal is to still be there in month 18. The accounts that drive meaningful inbound traffic to a product are not the ones that grew fastest, they are the ones that compounded the longest. Three months of patient activation is the smallest investment that produces an account capable of compounding for years.
The path is slow on purpose. That is what makes it work.
